We are putting together a special tour of Xcel Energy's Monticello Nuclear Plant (2807 County Rd 75 NE Monticello, MN 55362) for AEE Twin Cities members. Due to constraints, this will be a member only tour capped at 15 people. Please join us on September 25th (9/25/25), which includes:

Tour Times/Agenda:

8:45 am – arrival (enter Site Admin Building – SAB 5 conference room)

9:00 am – presentation

9:30 am – security visitor badging

10:15 am – enter plant (control room, turbine building/reactor building -stand on top of reactor!)

11:45 am – back to SAB 5 to pick up belongings

12:00 am – wrap-up/head to parking lot

IMPORTANT: You must have a government issued photo ID (real ID is not required at this time for nuclear plants). You will also need to provide your SSN. If you are a foreign national or if you have dual citizenship with the US and another country, we need your name sooner rather than later as there is extra paperwork to fill out and additional approvals.

Parking:

Parking instructions are included in the Visitor Site Instructions document, which you can view on the event page on the AEE Twin Cities website. You do not need to stop at the gate house. Just drive through the gate and keep going to the Site Admin Building (SAB). There is an area of reserved parking spots for visitors right in front of the SAB.

Clothing: Wear flat, close-toed shoes. You will not be able to enter the plant with sandals or a high heel for your own safety.

Check temperature/weather before deciding what to wear. The plant will be warmer than outdoor temperatures. Cotton clothing (which we know is rare), is recommended. Jeans, a shirt, and tennis shoes are acceptable.

Protective Gear:  We will provide hard hats, safety glasses and hearing protection. Steel/composite-toed shoes are NOT required for tours.

Other:

  • Phones can be brought on the tour. We will ask that they go on airplane mode prior to entering the control room as to not interfere with operating plant equipment.
  • There will be some steps so ensure you are comfortable taking stairs as necessary.
  • A presentation will be provided which will cover Xcel Energy’s generation portfolio mix high level, Xcel’s nuclear plants, how nuclear energy produces electricity, spent nuclear fuel management, and advanced nuclear.

The list of attendees will be sent to Xcel Energy four weeks ahead of time, due to security and a required background check. That will also have to be our event sign-up cut-off. If you sign up, please make your best attempt to attend as well will not be able to add anyone at the last minute.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you need help logging in!
